IT must have been lonely for the 13 people who formed the entire Muslim community in Canada in 1871. They would have been often misunderstood, coming as they did from a religious and cultural tradition totally alien to that of the day.
The way they prayed would have been different from the mainstream Christian tradition, as would have been the halal nature of their food.

One can only imagine the challenges that their dressing posed. Of course, things have changed substantially for Muslims in Canada today.
Nearly 140 years later and with adherents of the second largest religion in the second largest country in the world exerting political, economic and cultural influence beyond their numbers, there is a growing awareness among Canadians and the polity of the need to understand Islam better.
Unlike its southern neighbour, which has had its fair share of problems in the interface with Islam, the Canadian government has been spared run-ins with Muslims.
